We’re very excited to be able to give back to our community educators and students, thanks to the ongoing support of our 1,400 curbside glass recyclers, and 1,000 glass drop-off event recyclers.
This year, we’re awarding five $1,000 GiveBack Grants in support of our local public school programs, clubs, and learning opportunities.

Program Descriptions
Hellgate Elementary Community Garden
A school garden and outdoor learning center that provides space for collaborative, place-based learning for the entire district.
Russell Elementary Kindergarten Service Project
Replacing five trees lost in the 2024 storm as part of a long-term effort to increase shade in classrooms and on the playground. Supported by Healthy Schools committee volunteers with Families for a Livable Climate.
Sentinel High School – After School Pickleball Club
The Sentinel High School Pickleball club will provide students with an inclusive, accessible sport to build confidence, strengthen meaningful connections, and develop healthy lifestyle/habits. Through learning a lifelong sport, participants gain skills that promote both their physical well-being and long-term engagement and positive community activities.
Montana Natural History Center – Visiting Naturalist in the Schools
The Visiting Naturalist in the Schools (VNS) program is a year-long, standards-aligned science education program that brings hands-on natural history learning directly into 4th and 5th grade classrooms in and around Missoula. Through monthly lessons, engaging field activities, and inquiry-based investigations, Teaching Naturalists build mentor relationships with students to hone scientific skills, deepen their understanding of local ecosystems, and develop a lasting connection to the natural world. The program integrates Next Generation Science Standards practices, place-based learning, and stewardship to support teachers and inspire curiosity in every student.
Healthy Acres Healthy Communities Foundation – Youth in Restoration (YIR)
YIR was developed to expose high school students to processes involved in land management. YIR provides youth career mentorship and on-the-ground experience in natural resource/conservation work while building and strengthening partnerships within a diverse mix of stewardship and management organizations.
Missoula Public Library – Summer Learning Program
The Library offers a summer menu of literacy options for Missoula County school children that are designed to prevent the “summer slide” in reading skills and engages children in creativity, STEM, and other types of learning. Activities include reading guides, logs and contests; free books; events with children’s authors; and a variety of music, art and science projects.
Watershed Education Network
Our school programs are aligned with current state and national standards, and we reach rural and under-served schools throughout Western Montana. We take broad science concepts and connect them to places students know, often within walking distance of their classrooms. Thousands of students have now discovered the natural laboratories right in their own backyards through the efforts of our committed staff and volunteers.
Lolo School Leadership Council
Leadership Council is a rewarding and fun experience for students to learn Leadershipship skills and to advocate for students needs/wants. Student representatives work with school employees to improve school environment, culture and activities.
“In Tune” – Missoula Rotary Club
Expands musical access by providing public school students with instruments who otherwise may not be able to obtain them.
Missoula Crescendo Club – Teaching Artists in the Schools
Missoula Crescendo Club brings free joy-filled community concerts and life-changing music education, mentorship, and scholarships to hundreds of Missoula kids who deserve the chance to thrive through music.
